The Apple Store | 5th Avenue NYC

Today’s post is in honor of the iPhone 4 that should arrive sometime during the day today…a day earlier than the initially anticipated arrival on the 24th.

In our New York City adventure on Friday, we stopped for a quick snapshot of “the Cube” – aka the Apple Store on 5th Avenue.  The store isn’t all that dissimilar from other Apple stores you’ve probably been to, other than the fact that the real estate was probably ridiculously expensive, and the store is underground with an attractive (and very Apple) glassy exterior.  Looking forward to the new toy!

Springtime at Strawbery Banke

It has been a busy spring/summer for Strawbery Banke, I’m sure, with the visit of the Tall Ships over Memorial Day weekend and all of the in-season tourists and visitors that make their way into Portsmouth.  I snapped a few shots of this colorful evening on the grounds of Puddle Dock in the midst of the historic buildings.

The Atrium at Portsmouth Regional Hospital

I am incredibly excited to share with you today a project that has been in the works for the past month.  As many of you know, the Portsmouth Regional Hospital undertook a $63 million expansion project to enhance and extend the high level of healthcare provided to greater Seacoast residents back in 2007.  The multi-year, phased expansion, which was formally approved in April by the state of New Hampshire, will add nearly 68,000 square feet of new construction and more than 88,000 square feet of renovations to the existing facility.

I am very privileged and appreciative to announce that I have been working with the design team including local architectural firm JSA, Inc. on an art display that will be featured in the new atrium space in the new wing!!  In total, there will be twelve pieces totaling OVER 100 SQUARE FEET OF PRINTED CANVAS featuring entirely Philip Case Cohen originals!!  All of the pieces we selected for the installation have a tie to the waterfront or the seacoast…featuring lighthouses, the commercial fish pier, tugboats, historic waterfront…etc.  The install should be taking place in the next week or so and will be available for viewing to hospital visitors.  A grand opening will likely follow later in the Fall.

Also working with JSA, Inc. is David Maurand of designPhase:3 – who has envisioned and artfully put together the rendering shown below and coordinated to have the infrastructure constructed that will hold the canvas prints that will be on display.  Working in concert with David is Image4 of Manchester will be constructing the hardware and infrastructure of the display.

Local printing firm Infinite Imaging has done an incredibly beautiful job bringing the photography you’re used to seeing here at The Daily Portsmouth to life on the canvas pieces (against the orange wall in their new HQ at the top of the post and below), with beautifully rich color and accuracy (and also very quickly!).  What’s exciting is that of the 100+ square feet of canvas, there will be two pieces that are 7′ wide and several others 4′ wide.  I cannot wait to see them hanging in the new space, which is incredibly inviting and fitting for placement in Portsmouth’s hospital – complete with a gigantic nautical map featured on the wall that will be holding the prints.  I hope you’ll visit the space to check out the gorgeous design (and of course the canvas prints that will complement the space!).

There Will Soon Be A Mrs. Daily Portsmouth

I am very happy to announce to everyone that I spent a wonderful day in New York City on Friday with an amazing & lovely woman, Ms. Stephanie Cortes – out on assignment to capture some photos of the city.  I’m even more happy to announce that Ms. Stephanie Cortes will soon be Mrs. Stephanie Cohen….or as I’ve joked, Mrs. Daily Portsmouth!!

When we travel – we tend to do a cute & memorable photo like this in iconic places.  Without getting too far into the story, let’s just say it was a perfect day for a walk around the city to do some shooting…and a wonderful day for a great surprise.  Having grown up in/around NYC, the Brooklyn Bridge was a particularly special place for Steph – and one where we hadn’t done a shot yet.  We had done a test shot, that I pretended not to like and made her come review before suggesting taking another one.  In this photo (the second attempt), she had absolutely no idea what I was doing as her eyes were closed….I had her come back to check out the photo on the camera’s screen when she spotted something out of the ordinary….the rest is history.

An Antique Woody | New Castle, NH

I headed out to Fort Constitution in New Castle, NH in the rain a couple weeks back to investigate what I might see off the coast….I ended up not making it out of the parking lot, where I saw a freighter being escorted towards the Piscataqua River by a Moran Towing tugboat…and I also happened to see this classic “woody” wood paneled car apparently known as “The Anchor” from New Castle, NH.  I didn’t have much time otherwise I would have stopped and said hello to the group selling rain barrels or educating folks on conservation and saving Great Bay – I am not exactly sure (hopefully someone can fill me in or correct me if they have any info)…but essentially it seemed like they were good people hanging out and encouraging people to be good environmental stewards.

In any event, it was great to see such a cool and beautiful older car on the seacoast.

Springtime in Prescott Park

The gardens of Prescott Park are starting to show their full summer glory.  The rich colors of the flowers in bloom along with the vibrant green grass and soft summery sky make for a typical seacoast scene…complete with the towers of the Memorial Bridge visible in the distance.  Happy Friday!

Spring at the Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion

This bright yellow mansion is a fixture on Portsmouth’s historic waterfront.  It’s the Wentworth-Coolidge mansion, and I’ve previously featured some shots of the massive anchor on its lawn that overlooks New Castle and the harbor. I decided to take a drive over to check out the lush green grass and see if I could find any new inspiration…and came across this large stone wall that framed the house nicely.  I also loved the colors of the sky…the rain was holding off just long enough to enjoy being outside and make for a moody sky.
