Looking Up at The North Church

The North Church is one of the most photographed landmarks in Portsmouth.  It’s easy to see why, it’s beautiful, striking, easily identifiable (from all of Portsmouth), it captures light in a hundred different ways depending on the time of day, cloud cover, etc.  It’s been a fun challenge of mine to shoot it in as many different interesting ways as possible.  It’s so tall, that every time I walk nearby I find myself magnetized to looking up.  This shot is no exception, and I went with a dramatic black & white processing to give it a distinct feel.

The Gazebo | Calabash Cove St. Lucia

Calabash Cove is a small resort near the northernmost point of Saint Lucia.  It’s a beautiful property that hugs the coastline, full of natural lush greenery and plantings that compliment the facility and the private cottages that dot the coastline.  One of the features of the property is this lovely little gazebo that overlooks the shoreline and has an unbelievable vantage point towards the west and sunsets every night.  I loved the flowers and the colors throughout the property, and the rich blue sky and amazing clouds that always seemed to hang around.  Just at the left corner of the gazebo, a faint hit of a rainbow can be seen as a result from the rainstorm out on the horizon.

Cloudscape in New Castle

This evening was one of those nights where you are thankful that you witness such incredible natural beauty.  This ridiculous cloudscape was moving around the seacoast, with some intense late afternoon light filtering through and making landscapes at every corner into capture-worthy visions.  Unfortunately, I didn’t have my camera handy for most of them – but managed to capture this scene from the Wentworth Marina in New Castle.

Badger’s Island

Badger’s Island is a little slice of Maine that sits in the middle of the Piscataqua River and is connected to Kittery to the north and Portsmouth to the south by the Memorial Bridge.  This little gem of a photo was taken with a medium format lens designed for use on the Hasselblad 500 series camera and is manufactured by Carl Zeiss.  I’ve learned to love this 100mm piece of glass…which seems to bring a nostalgic look and a unique texture to images taken on my Canon 5d Mark II.  I look forward to getting back out in warmer weather and taking the older lenses for more test drives.

A Perfect Summer Sunset

I think I’ll let this one speak for itself.  After grabbing some dinner at Poco’s on a warm summer evening, I decided to sneak out as the check was coming to see what the sky was doing.  It had hints of greatness, but I couldn’t see it because of the canopy…when I got outside, this was a pleasant surprise.  Shot from the landing above Harpoon Willy’s on Bow Street.

Believe it or not, this is a single exposure…without much additional editing aside from adding some light into the foreground so you can make out the buildings and the tugboats.

Sunrise from Peirce Island

Here is another shot from sunrise on Saturday morning this past weekend.  Even though the forecasts called for clear skies…we were gifted with some interesting clouds that continued to change through the early morning light.

This shot was taken from the Peirce Island boat ramp, which is one of my favorite places to shoot from…and one of my favorite shots.  Even though getting up for sunrise is easily one of the crazier things I’ve done…it’s right in line with the early morning crew practices I used to do without hesitation – and I’m often rewarded with a decent shot or two, and the satisfaction that I got up to do something meaningful (even if it’s only meaningful to me).

An Evening at the Wentworth-Coolidge

The seacoast experienced a gorgeous sunset on Thursday evening.  After an event in New Castle at the Wentworth Marina – I was joined by another local photographer, Ron Risman of Cameratown.com.  We decided to head over to the sprawling Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion property on the back channel in Portsmouth…and despite the ridiculous mosquitoes that wanted us to pack it in for the night, we enjoyed some lush colors in the sky and some moonlight.

The shot above features the large yellow structure as it sits along the waterfront with some awesome summer hues.  The shot below was taken directly opposite from the sunset shot a bit later on – and features the gorgeous moonlight reflected on the water, with a little bit of jetty to spice it up.

For the camera techies out there – the shot above was a 5-exposure series (-2 to +2)…and the moonlight shot below was a 3-exposure set of brackets (-2 to +2).
