Sometimes a nice shoot during the week can be incredibly rejuvenating. Driving around after an incredible sunset, I was amazed at how awesome everything still looked as dusk set in. A thick fog had emerged over the waterfront in places and the clouds were still lit enough to create a dramatic environment, so I decided to pull over near Portsmouth Kayak Adventures at Witch Cove Marina to see if I could get an interesting shot. I set my camera on top of one of the massive wooden logs that the pier was attached to, and hoped a few brackets would catch the range of light in the scene. Sure enough, it did, and I have this hauntingly beautiful shot to prove it.

Minutes after sunrise on the beach in Boynton Beach, FL, the lifeguard on duty posted this singular red flag in the sand. This was part of their notification system to let beach visitors know that the water wasn’t swimmable. I thought it was an awesome scene, almost like a moon landscape with the American Flag posted in the sand…and believe it or not, it was quite cold. I think the temperature was in the mid 30s, and the ocean was fogging in the early morning light…and the cool colors of the ocean with the warm clouds in the distance and the starkly red flag made this a solid shot for me.

Today’s post is a double feature. The first image is a treat from home base for the next few days….the view of San Francisco Bay. This is the fog that San Francisco is so renowned for….once it blew over, you could see Alcatraz just about dead center in the frame. I’ll try to snap a good sunset shot before we hit the road for Yellowstone.

Below is a treat from a Portsmouth Harbor Cruise from the summer….what had been the sunset cruise that set sail at 7pm became more of a city lights cruise as the light had retreated as we made our way under the Memorial Bridge. I didn’t quite mind though – as there was a beautiful crescent moon and the planet Venus hanging out just to its right. This shot is one of my recent favorites – as it silhouettes two of Portsmouth’s icons under a summer sky. The Memorial Bridge and the North Church mark the city’s skyline.

I thought this shot was an apt metaphor for the unknown fate of the Memorial Bridge and its potentially damning effects on the growth of downtown Kittery. I’ve always enjoyed seeing the working fleet docked at the flank of the bridge…and the fog rolled in just perfectly this evening after the thunderstorms cleared.

I was able to get a few great shots from a unique opportunity I had thanks to some good friends. This was shot atop the building that the Ale House Inn is in…and they are renting the room with the incredible view for the next couple weeks. Feel free to give them a call if you’re looking to take advantage of a gorgeous view and an evening downtown.
