USS Carter Hall | Portsmouth Naval Shipyard

At the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, a new guest has arrived and docked for a few days.  The 609-foot USS Carter Hall is on the scene to load and transport (inside the boat!) the decommissioned NR-1 submarine from the nuclear shipyard to the State of Washington.  Read more about it at Foster’s or at the Portsmouth Herald.  The massive boat, as seen above from Prescott Park, is quite an imposing piece of engineering…from afar I thought it was a new building when I couldn’t see the bottom of the ship.  I then took a stroll to the waterfront and saw that it was in fact a boat!  Below is a shot taken with my iPhone.

Tugboats Under a Full Moon

Portsmouth’s waterfront under a full moon on November 2nd, 2009.  The full moon was joined by some clouds, an orange glow on the waterfront, and very cold air (and I wasn’t wearing a proper jacket – so I retreated accordingly).
