Coastal Kittery

The view of Kittery from downtown Portsmouth provides a glimpse into waterfront living.  Kittery has a combination of working docks along its coastal waters as well as high end condominiums and homes. I love seeing the little lobster buoys and traps still along the coast, reminding us that the waterfront is still a vital working resource for all of us who live around it.

Winter at The Marina

What a difference a week makes! Last week we were reminded that winter is still officially here with a nice snow storm, which dumped 10 or so inches of snow around the seacoast.  This week, we are eyeing temperatures that are predicted to climb into the 60s, a reminder that spring is only around the corner.

My favorite part of winter is the moment when the skies clear and all the trees and fresh snow are still serenely undisturbed – it’s best when this is the morning after the storm and the skies are richly blue.  The sky is a bit ominous still in this shot of the Great Cove Boat Club, but it’s better than nothing.

The Great Cove Boat Club

With its spectacular riverfront location, the seacoast of New Hampshire and Maine is choc full of places to moor a boat. I found this great vantage point to see the Great Cove Boat Club on Spinney Creek in Maine.  A nice long exposure blurs the lightning fast movement of the Piscataqua River at the end of the day.

A Quiet Afternoon at The Memorial Bridge

Today’s image is a very simple, peaceful image of the Memorial Bridge in its final days. Closed to traffic and standing tall over the Piscataqua River, the bridge enjoys a nice view of the late day sky above.  It’s a bit eerie to see that the Kittery side tower already had its rounded cable holders removed, already altering the bridge’s appearance beyond the obvious disappearance of the center span.  Once I am able to get a post-worthy shot of the bridge in its current state, I’ll be sure to share with all.

Three Bridges

With Portsmouth’s bridges being one of the most talked about items of the past few years, I thought I’d take a moment to feature them from a different angle.  Often – I take for granted that Maine probably has the best view of Portsmouth, from the various shorelines in Kittery.

I’ve shot the three bridges before, from Peirce Island, but this vantage point from the other side of the river provides a glimpse of the Piscataqua River Bridge (high-level), the Middle Bridge, with the Memorial Bridge in the far distance.  Once the new bridge has been constructed, it will look more like the Middle Bridge’s twin.  The shot isn’t overly dramatic, just a nice peaceful glimpse of the river…so I hope to be back with some more outrageous sky conditions someday.

Sunset from Kittery

The Piscataqua River Bridge is the dominant feature in this image taken from Great Cove Boat Club in Kittery, Maine.  The sunset was a fiery one and the late day blue light just barely illuminates the boats in the foreground as the bridge silhouette stands tall in the distance.

The Martingale Wharf

It has been finished.  After many years of starts and stops, the building has finally arrived in all of its waterfront glory.  Tenants include a few office users, and Portsmouth’s newest seafood restaurant, Surf Portsmouth.  The building has an expansive deck with an incredible view of the water, and I’m sure all tenants on the upper floors will appreciate the knockout views on the water side.  It’s wonderful to have our city street back intact on Bow Street, with a very cool staircase leading down to the waterfront.  I’d encourage you to check it out, or peek through the windows to see the lush finishes in the entryways – or stop in to Surf for a drink.  While the view of the water from Bow Street has disappeared from the old parking lots that once stood in the place of the Martingale, it’s looking infinitely better from the water side and from Kittery, where this shot was taken.
