Three Bridges

With Portsmouth’s bridges being one of the most talked about items of the past few years, I thought I’d take a moment to feature them from a different angle.  Often – I take for granted that Maine probably has the best view of Portsmouth, from the various shorelines in Kittery.

I’ve shot the three bridges before, from Peirce Island, but this vantage point from the other side of the river provides a glimpse of the Piscataqua River Bridge (high-level), the Middle Bridge, with the Memorial Bridge in the far distance.  Once the new bridge has been constructed, it will look more like the Middle Bridge’s twin.  The shot isn’t overly dramatic, just a nice peaceful glimpse of the river…so I hope to be back with some more outrageous sky conditions someday.

Sunset from Kittery

The Piscataqua River Bridge is the dominant feature in this image taken from Great Cove Boat Club in Kittery, Maine.  The sunset was a fiery one and the late day blue light just barely illuminates the boats in the foreground as the bridge silhouette stands tall in the distance.

The Martingale Wharf

It has been finished.  After many years of starts and stops, the building has finally arrived in all of its waterfront glory.  Tenants include a few office users, and Portsmouth’s newest seafood restaurant, Surf Portsmouth.  The building has an expansive deck with an incredible view of the water, and I’m sure all tenants on the upper floors will appreciate the knockout views on the water side.  It’s wonderful to have our city street back intact on Bow Street, with a very cool staircase leading down to the waterfront.  I’d encourage you to check it out, or peek through the windows to see the lush finishes in the entryways – or stop in to Surf for a drink.  While the view of the water from Bow Street has disappeared from the old parking lots that once stood in the place of the Martingale, it’s looking infinitely better from the water side and from Kittery, where this shot was taken.

Morrison’s Lobsters | Kittery, Maine

While out on an afternoon walk, I thought it was time to head across the Memorial Bridge and do some quick exploring on Badger’s Island.  I found an absolutely gorgeous view of Portsmouth, the Memorial Bridge, and some very cool structures and buildings dotting the waterfront.  The Morrison’s Lobsters building has been in several of my photos from the other side of the river, so I wanted to be sure to explore a little more closely.  Perfectly New England!

Rain at the Shipyard

This shot captures the mood of the past week and its weather – washed out, muted and yet serene.  This long exposure is lacking any cloud movement or fascinating elements to make it stand out incredibly, but that’s why I like it.  The simple softness of the flowing water and the lack of color aside from the sign painted on the shipyard building, making readers aware of its birth in 1800.

Memorial Bridge Rail

Memorial Bridge, Portsmouth, New Hampshire

A unique perspective on the deteriorating Memorial Bridge. The paint of the railing can be seen peeling away to its rusted undercoating…along with the clearance heights on the abutment. Kittery, Maine can be seen on the other side of the river with its homes and docked fishing/lobstering boats.

Golden Harvest | Kittery, Maine

With the return of the Spring weather here on the seacoast – I’ve found myself venturing out of my routine a bit more regularly.  Maybe with enough practice I’ll have a new routine…this particular afternoon brought me across the river to Maine in search of a chocolate cake, which I was able to find at Golden Harvest.  As I’m sure many already know – this is one of the seacoast’s true institutions when it comes to groceries and fresh food.  I remember first coming here as a little kid with a friend’s mom on summer vacation and hating the fact that I was sitting outside staring at a bunch of vegetables.  Fast forward 20 years and here I am picking up some fruit for lunch, some cake to deliver as a surprise…and the character of the building is still very much true to itself.  Something I’ve always appreciated about this spot…go check it out sometime and grab some food for a picnic at your favorite outdoor destination.
