Photographers for Japan | Philip Case Cohen

First and foremost, I want to provide everyone with an opportunity to help me help Japan.  With the devastation that has stricken the island country following the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear catastrophe, I wanted to join with several of my photographer friends from around the world in raising funds (via print sales) to donate to the relief efforts in Japan.  Living in extremely close proximity to multiple sources of potential nuclear radiation (Seabrook Nuclear Power Station and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard – nuclear submarines), I can only imagine the fear that the local residents near the plant might be living with.

For the next two weeks, any profits (100% of profits) I receive through print sales or gift card sales at PhilipCaseCohen.com or here at The Daily Portsmouth will be donated to the “Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami”.  Of course, you may also donate directly to the Red Cross by visiting their donation page HERE.  If you make a purchase, I’ll send you a personal email afterwards letting you know the amount of proceeds being donated in your name. Visit fellow photographer Oliver Fluck’s website for a nice aggregation of other photographers contributing to the effort.

It would be my honor to help place artwork in your home and to help others rebuild their homes.

Living in New England, we are graced with four unique seasons each year.  It just so happens that Winter seems to stick in the minds of most residents, but it’s the change from season to season that I enjoy so much…and the shift to Spring tends to bring me a renewed energy and outlook.  Longer days, warmer weather, and the return of people to Market Square – and a sure sign of good weather is the presence of motorcycles in front of Breaking New Grounds.  In this shot, the Portsmouth Athenaeum can be seen in the distance with a couple bikes soaking up the sun in the foreground.

Breaking New Grounds « A Night in Market Square

One of the benefits of living in a large town with the benefits of a small city, is a nice dimly light downtown.  I don’t mean dimly lit in a dangerous or scary way, there are plenty of street lamps illuminating sidewalks and streets, but I mean dimly lit as in there is no Times Square/ridiculously lit areas.  Market Square, arguably the busiest intersection in all of Portsmouth, still has a cozy and intimate feeling at night.  I hate the yellow street lamps, it doesn’t make for great photographs, but it definitely makes for a distinctive feel.  Here the warmth of the interior of Breaking New Grounds spills out onto the brick patio of Market Square. This shot also marks the first over the next few days that will be taken on a Hasselblad that I’ll be demoing.  I received the H4D-31 (a 31-megapixel medium format digital camera)….a beautifully solid piece of machinery that captures a higher dynamic range on a larger sensor than my usual Canon 5d Mark II.  I can’t wait to get it out for some real hands-on shooting.

A.E. Alie & Sons | Doors of Portsmouth

In the latest installment of The Doors of Portsmouth, here’s a glimpse of Alie Jewelers, one of the most recognizable storefronts in town….in the midst of a blizzard.  I think the intensity of the light and the snowflakes do a lot to up the drama of a normally lovely door.

Snow in the Square

With the return of winter, I’m even more eager than ever to catch a few out of the ordinary scenes while the snow flies.  I’ve only been in town for one snowfall so far this year, although there’s news that another storm may make a stop in the seacoast over the weekend.  Here, one of the benches near the Market Square fountain sits empty as a pedestrian stands just long enough for me to snap this shot (conveniently in the vicinity of the lamppost and wreath).  Happy winter to all, and happy shooting to those brave enough to enjoy the elements for the next few months.

Market Square | Wide Angle

This is one of my favorite shots of Market Square I’ve captured over the past couple years.  It’s a Christmas time panoramic shot featuring a wonderfully wide angle view of Market Street, Daniel Street, a glimpse of the Christmas Tree and of course, Breaking New Grounds.  The sunset this afternoon was just incredible with rich orange tones just reaching over the rooftops of the Congress Street buildings to illuminate the Alie Jewelers building and the Market Street rowhouses in the distance.  You can even see a little tiny bird flying just above the Market Street roadway in the upper left area.  This one will look gorgeous large-scale, and I plan to make some cool huge prints out of it for my house or office.  Hope you enjoy!

In case you’re in a pinch and still have to do some last minute shopping, please consider buying a few prints for your friends and family who love Portsmouth!  I have images from Portsmouth and many other spots throughout the US (NYC, Boston, Yellowstone…).  Happy Holidays to all. Happy Holidays from Market Square

Dear Everyone,

Merry Christmas.

Love,

Portsmouth

Tis the season to spread some love & joy.  This past weekend the city hosted its annual Holiday Parade & tree lighting.  The holidays are definitely here again along with some ridiculously cold weather that I decided to torture my hands in while heading out to snap a few shots of the tree in Market Square.  Be sure to support our local retailers this year and spend some dollars locally.

Market Square | Then & Now

Today’s post features the focal point of Portsmouth (on land anyway…).  Market Square is probably the busiest area by square foot in all of the city….with outdoor cafes, window shoppers, outdoor benches, not to mention a pretty ridiculous intersection with cars coming from Daniel Street, Pleasant Street and Market Street.  I wanted to feature this vibrant spot with people going about their business, walking, driving, browsing…and also wanted to show what this hopping place looked like back in the day of horse & buggy carriages.  Fortunately I was able to locate this shot below.  You can clearly make out the Athenaeum, the Alie Jewelers building, the Market Square Jewelers building…the Daniel Street intersection, and of course Market Street itself.  I plan to have a few more of these Then & Now posts for everyone to enjoy.

The modern day Market Square shot was a 3-exposure composition….with a fair amount of movement between the three shots.  The software that I use for the exposure blending (Photomatix) now has a feature that lets you select areas of movement – so that you can pick the best image and freeze the motion to the one frame.  It makes for a beautiful shot and a more realistic appearance.  Hope you enjoy!
