Market Street Salt Piles

Market Street received a recent facelift when the sidewalks were torn up and replaced with new brick walkways and period lighting.  I must say, despite however expensive it must have been, it’s a nice classy look for that section of town.  The salt piles look as rustic as even along with the mural of the US Coast Guard Eagle adorning the entrance to Granite State Minerals, but the walkways are looking sharp and will be well lit during evenings from now on.  Hopefully the new design will help curb the queueing up of the massive salt trucks along Market Street on cold winter mornings.

Also – be sure to check out the new “Exhibits” tab listed above the header!  I hope to use this as a guide to where you can see a display of my work in person…as long as there are exhibits to share with those interested throughout the Seacoast.

At the Corner of Bow & Market

With all of the construction that’s been making its rounds throughout the city this summer, you may have missed a few of the changes.  Here’s a shot of the intersection of Market Street & Bow Street after the Market St. section has been repaved & re-striped.  You might’ve noticed something a bit funny about it as you’re driving home or waiting for pedestrians – that’s because the city moved the crosswalk to a slightly less treacherous location – which you can see next to the jagged yield line.  (It is also the street-level shot of the same area that was featured from above on July 11th.)

I love how the rowhouse building follows the contour of the street through the frame – but the coolest part of this photo to me is the fact that I finally noticed that it looks like Coca-Cola used to advertise on the side of the building.  I can make out a subtle “Coca” just above the Dolphin Striker’s awning – can you see it?

Today’s shot is another attempt at using the new neutral density filter…you’ll notice fewer people hanging out in the frame despite the dozens of people that were probably in and out in the moments the shots were snapped.  Still not the punch I’m looking for, but plenty of learning and tinkering to do…and plenty of tips to take from some of the seasoned folks in my treasured photography network!

At Deer & Market Street

The corner of Deer Street & Market Street must be one of the busiest intersections in town – right up there with Congress & Market and Congress/Middle/Islington/Maplewood.  It’s a great place to stand and watch cars travel into/out of town (although it’s not always the best spot to drive or to try and cross the street).

I love this spot – as the street narrows down as you follow the white line and head up Market Street into the heart of downtown, you feel like you’re arriving somewhere.  I love the curve of the road and how the commerce of Deer Street meets the old architecture of the building to the left with its stepped roofline, and how directly to my left (from where this photo was taken), is the entrance to Granite State Minerals where trucks carry sand & salt throughout New England during the winter.

The city’s newly rebuilt pumphouse that stands at the corner of the streets (center frame) is even pretty fancy, with the beautiful granite “Welcome To Portsmouth” sign.

The View from The 100 Club

The view from the top floor at 100 Market Street, from the private balcony of the 100 Club, must be the best in the entire city.  You can see across the Piscataqua River to Kittery, over to the Memorial Bridge and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard…and looking westward you can see both the Middle Bridge and the Piscataqua River Bridge towards Newington…and you can see all the winding rooftops of Market Street leading towards the North Church and Market Square.

Thanks to Catapult Seacoast and the Business Speaker Series the organization has put together, I was able to enjoy a fascinating evening listening to Chase Bailey…and enjoy a few minutes out on the wrap-around balcony that is one of the beautiful features of the 100 Club.  I’ve got a few more cool shots that will make their way up over the next week or so…but today is a taste of the eagle-eye vantage point.

Fresh Pavement on Market Street

One of the many projects that the City has taken on since the start of the Spring was the replacement of the sidewalks on Market Street with new brick sidewalks.  I think that some of the older sidewalks were brick anyway, but thankfully this month marked the completion of the project in this section of town – with fancy new brick sidewalks for all to enjoy, and more importantly, a smooth road surface (with new yellow lines to keep everyone on their side).   Things are looking good on this section of Market and the sidewalks are currently being replaced and widened next to the salt piles and the Sheraton.  I can’t wait for everything to be complete and for all the orange cones to be retired for the season.

100 Market Street

This shot was taken from the corner of Hanover Street & Market Street.  The building at 100 Market is one of the newer commercial real estate additions in town, one of the first major redevelopment projects dating back 5-10 years ago (I’m not sure when it was completed)….then came the Popovers building on Congress Street, some residential buildings on State Street, The Martingale Wharf and now Portwalk Place.  It’s no secret that I love this building, not so much for the architecture, which I happen to enjoy, but for the view it affords those who get to visit the 100 Club.

I wanted to feature 100 Market Street today because I have a few photographs that will be featured as part of an exhibit opening today (May 14th) and running through August 1st.  The show features the visual/performing arts as interpreted by visual artists.  I took a quick walk through as pieces were being hung yesterday, and it looks to be a dynamic show – featuring some great concert portraits by Nancy Grace Horton and other photographers, painters, etc.  My shots are on the 1st floor (enter through the door shown above)…and feature some behind the scenes shots from ‘Round the Square, which I sat in on one evening a few weeks back.  I had a blast shooting in a different setting and out of my comfort zone…looking forward to the next opportunity.
