Guest Post at Brian Matiash Photography

If you’re reading this – you need to do both of us a favor.  For yourself, you need to go enjoy the guest post I did over at the blog of fellow photographer Brian Matiash.  For me, please go visit Brian and thank him for giving me such an awesome opportunity to open a new series for him that features fellow photographers in an open forum setting….I had my choice of topics to write about, and it became immediately clear that I had to incorporate Portsmouth as a theme.  This great city is primarily responsible for getting me involved and passionate about photography all over again since buying my first digital camera last year.  I hope you enjoy the post…and more importantly – go check out Brian’s work (it is stunning).  Brian always captures the fascinating textures in everyday scenes that we all take for granted…I’m hoping to host Brian on a photowalk in the very near future – stay tuned and I’ll keep you posted!!

A Rainy Alley

Here’s some fresh content for everyone to enjoy! A new scene, a newly fixed camera, and some rainy snow.  The alley you see here is actually the brick walkway off of Church Street in between the North Church and 10 Pleasant Street (the building where Me & Ollie’s and Stonewall Kitchen are located) – with the entrance to Bank of America in the distance.  I’ve always enjoyed this little alley right around the corner from work – where some trash & recycling bins are tucked and where the ventilation system blasts warm air (which is particularly nice on a cold wintry day).  I decided to get a fresh cup of coffee in the afternoon and take advantage of having the camera back after its absence for the week.  It’s looking to be a sunny & moderate weekend…so get out and enjoy it!

Bow Street at Night

Here is a street scape view of Bow Street, to complement the post from earlier this week that depicted the waterside view.  There is no shortage of hanging signs on this side of the buildings – prime advertising for the businesses lucky enough to have such a great spot.  Only a few more weeks until the newly configured decks will be open for business.  Below is another shot of Bow Street taken from 100 Market Street, where you can see the curve of the street.

LaCava’s Wharf

In the late afternoon I decided to visit the usual spots before trying to inspire myself to shoot in some less traveled areas. On my way out of town, I decided to check out the late afternoon light in the South End at Prescott Park. On the Peirce Island Road Bridge I saw the sun glinting directly in my direction, which can make for some terrible photos – but being the stubborn person I am, decided to try anyway to see what I could come up with. The shot above is the end result, which I happen to like because of the sun streaks and the muted colors – yet the character of the neighborhood still stands out.

The Departure of the Freighter (Alrar | Monrovia)

After deciding to head into town to pick up a morning coffee, I noticed that the tugboats were not in their usual ready position at the side of Ceres Street – and I heard some sirens begin to chirp over in the Middle Bridge area.  This usually means that the tugs are either out in Portsmouth Harbor, readying to bring a ship into one of the docks up the Piscataqua River, or they are escorting a ship back towards the Atlantic Ocean.  This morning, I was lucky to catch the tugs escorting a boat back towards the ocean (the Alrar of Monrovia)…and after running from Ceres St., I was able to catch the boat passing under the Memorial Bridge.  More shots to follow…a nice morning surprise.
