Tugboats at Dusk

The instantly recognizable Moran Towing Tugboats resting at dusk.  The workhorses sit patiently waiting for the inclement weather to return, when the freighter traffic picks up steam.  I’ve seen them escorting a ship here and there…but the waterfront has been pretty quiet in terms of working waterfront traffic (and usually is during the summer season).  Be sure to check the large version of this one out by clicking on the photo.

For the first time in a very long time, I find myself with a backlog of images I’ve edited that I’m really happy with. Usually I’m scrambling to come up with a good shot from a recent shoot, only hours before the next post is due for publishing here on the site.  I’m thrilled to have a few days worth ahead of time to share with everyone – and I’m hoping it will allow me more creative flexibility in covering some new territory in the next couple weeks to shoot. I’ll also have some unique NYC shots to share from a trip this weekend that included a city lights harbor cruise and a stop in the madness of Times Square at midnight on Saturday night.  For those of you who are Mad Men fans out there – I also snapped a shot of the Time & Life building, which is where the new Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce agency is located this season.  I could spend hours wandering the city & shooting the skyscrapers & streetscapes.

Bridges | New York City & Portsmouth

Today I wanted to feature a few of my favorite bridges on this planet we share.  Above, is one of my shots of the Brooklyn Bridge from a recent trip into the city.  I wanted to get a somewhat fresh take on the bridge that thousands of people have photographed thousands of times..it’s definitely one of those shots on every photographer’s bucket list.  I plan to get back and shoot more, but this was another one I’m happy with in the meantime…and I thought I’d give a bit of an antique treatment to honor the age and timelessness of the structure.

Below you can enjoy one of my simple shots of a beautiful late evening over the Piscataqua River.  I don’t think I’ll ever tire of the view…I enjoyed the deep blues in the evening sky with the faint hint of orange from the setting sun.  The freighter and the lights on the bridges and the reflections add a peacefulness to the shot that keeps me coming back.

After the Storm | Portsmouth Waterfront

As promised, today features two closer views of the Portsmouth waterfront under the beautiful and immense cloud formations from Thursday night’s storms.  The blue of the evening sky highlights the North Church steeple while the sunlight grazes one of the layers of clouds in the image below.  This was truly one of those rare afternoons where the natural beauty of sunset matched the allure of the waterfront.  Some of my favorite captures to date.

The Simple Beauty of Sunset

There is something about the simple beauty of an evening sunset that leaves me speechless.  Sitting at the River House over dinner last Thursday night, I was just stunned that I’m lucky enough to have this view as part of my normal weekly routine.  I am greatly enjoying the return of the warm weather, so that I could sit out and enjoy the changing colors of the sky on a gorgeous night like this one was.

Mascot | Nassau & Middle Bridge

A large freighter by the name of Mascot from Nassau was docked at Portsmouth’s State Pier last week.  I caught this shot after the rain stopped for the night one of the evenings, which made for some great clouds and nice textures with the lighting.  I was loving the reflections of the lighting o the water in the river…and was glad to catch some last daylight.  The Piscataqua River Bridge and the Middle Bridge are seen in the distance.

Tugboats by Twilight

Here’s a shot of the Moran Towing tugboats at rest late in the evening under a cloudy sky.  You’ve got to love the glow of the orange lights on the rich colors of the tugs.  Behind the flag blowing in the wind you can see the bridge abutments of the Middle Bridge.
