Tugboats in the Evening & A Freighter In Port (the Tsuru Panama)

Another Moran Towing shot of the quintessential tugboats, unadulterated by editing for all of your viewing pleasure.  The subtly lit shot of the waterfront is a nice contrast to the shot below, which captures the vibrance of the Tsuru freighter from Nassau docked at the Granite State Minerals terminal for unloading in downtown Portsmouth earlier this week.

Scenes from Portsmouth | A Retrospective

I wanted to share with everyone a taste of the video footage that I’ve shot over the previous year during my voyages around town (be sure to view fullscreen in HD).  This is all footage shot with my Canon 5d Mark II camera, which I’ve had for just under a year, and is capable of HD video…but unfortunately I’m still learning and don’t really know what I’m doing beyond the still shots. I had fun compiling the footage, which has been set to Vampire Weekend’s song “Run” from their new album Contra.  Please drop a note and let me know your thoughts!

Today’s shots are a pair of sunrises from my stairwell in Atlantic Heights – the first shot (above) with an intense red glow and another more subtle, yet beautiful morning. I-95 can be seen in the distance.

Here’s a third shot from after the snow storm on January 18th once the sun made an appearance and the snow was still sticking to the trees.

Warm Weather Arrives in Portsmouth

I took advantage of the warmer weather we had today and went for a stroll. I hate to bore people with the same spots over and over, but I find myself drawn to the same places – and with another newly arrived freighter (the Atlantic Cozumel from Panama) and perfect conditions, snapped the shot above (and updated the header). Below is another artistic take on the Martingale Wharf project.

Check back again in coming days, I’m working on putting together a video compilation of various scenes that I’ve shot with the camera throughout the year. It’s been fun to put together, and I think you’ll like it.

I’m also exploring the possibility of having some work displayed at the newly opened gallery at 220 State Street – the Portsmouth Art Exchange. I met Jane Sewell this afternoon and had a lovely chat with her, go visit the store and say hello (and stay tuned, if everything comes together there will be an opening where I’d love to meet everyone!).

The Arrival of the Red Freighter (The Harmen Oldendorff)

The Harmen Oldendorff arrived at Portsmouth’s pier the afternoon of January 12th. This massive red barge-like freighter came to unload sand or salt onto Granite State Minerals’ terminal via the cool conveyor-belt like arm of the ship seen in the middle shot above. The beautiful red ship looked pretty striking against the clear blue sky of the day…but by evening it was a different story. Since the freighter apparently had difficulty with docking on the pier, the Moran Towing tugboat can be seen in place mid-ship in the evening shot, ensuring that the ship didn’t stray too far.

It was also pretty neat since it was docked in the reverse position that we’re used to seeing freighters, with the front of the ship facing the buildings that line the Bow Street waterfront.

Tugboats on the Water

Here’s another classic tugboat shot on the Piscataqua River. I couldn’t resist the opportunity of the beautiful lighting and the calmness of the day as I walked up Bow Street, despite the frigid wind & temperature.
