The Lonely Pier

Sunrise from the Commercial Fish Pier.  The sun is just about to make its first appearance for the day as seen over Four Tree Island from the Commercial Fish Pier.  I thought this quiet and empty dock was quite interesting in the morning’s calm…before any fishermen showed up to make use of it throughout the day.  I particularly liked the post at the end of the pier against the illuminated water…with the glow of the sun behind the trees in the distance.

1/2 ton at the Fish Pier

I’m not entirely sure what this crane contraption is used for – but I imagine it’s used for unloading the local catch…which I think is very cool.  We’re fortunate to have a robust local fishing economy – though I’ve been reading it’s getting harder and harder for them to remain in business.  I love having guests in town and taking them out to one of our many great restaurants…where there’s plenty of fresh seafood to be had.  I’m curious what the actual breakdown of local fish vs. non-local…but in any event, it’s delicious and I think the Commercial Fish Pier is one of the coolest spots in town.  It was also pretty awesome to have the tall ships docked there earlier this year!

Memorial Bridge Sunrise | The Gallery at 100 Market: Summer Opening

Another treat from last weekend’s sunrise features the Memorial Bridge basking in the glow of the first rays of the morning sun.  I love the subtleness of the scene, highlighted by the orange light on the rusted bridge with the hovering orange clouds.

Part of this evening’s show at The Gallery at 100 Market will feature the Memorial Bridge.  I wanted to highlight the beauty and the fragility of the bridge given its seemingly doomed future.

Thanks to Mark Dearborn I have these awesome posters and some very cool post cards that I’ve signed to give away to folks who make the trek to downtown Portsmouth for tonight’s show!  Hope to see you all at 100 Market Street sometime between 5 and 7pm!

Thanks again to everyone who has continued to visit the site and share their wonderful feedback.

Morning Light from Peirce Island

This weekend had some gorgeous photographic opportunities, and thanks to some encouragement from Chris Lazzery for an early wake up – we headed over to Peirce Island to see what we might find.  There were all sorts of surprises for what was supposed to be a cloudless morning….from the pink clouds above the shipyard, to some gorgeous saturated orange sunlight that you see in this shot….and then, all of a sudden (as if a lightswitch was hit), the light became completely muted and lost its early glow.  It actually made for some awesome shots…and Chris snapped one of my favorite shots I’ve ever seen from the Boat Launch.

Featured in the shot is The Chandler’s Loft – which is open VERY early…and located on Pickering Ave at the former Pickering Marina.  You can stop in to grab your bait, tackle, coffee…you get the idea.  I’ll have to stop in for coffee soon – I wish them the best in the new endeavor!

Sunrise from Peirce Island

Here is another shot from sunrise on Saturday morning this past weekend.  Even though the forecasts called for clear skies…we were gifted with some interesting clouds that continued to change through the early morning light.

This shot was taken from the Peirce Island boat ramp, which is one of my favorite places to shoot from…and one of my favorite shots.  Even though getting up for sunrise is easily one of the crazier things I’ve done…it’s right in line with the early morning crew practices I used to do without hesitation – and I’m often rewarded with a decent shot or two, and the satisfaction that I got up to do something meaningful (even if it’s only meaningful to me).

Sunrise at the Fish Pier

I took advantage of being up in time for sunrise on Saturday…meeting up with Chris Lazzery to see what we could find with the early morning light.  We ventured down on the Commercial Fish Pier to get some shots of the Memorial Bridge and see what was waiting in the wide expanse of sky visible from the spot.  Here’s the first flavor of what’s to come from the set of shots we grabbed…happy to take advantage of the lobster traps that were sitting idle on the pier with the incredibly lit clouds looming overhead.
