The Creole Miss

The Creole Miss is a tugboat not often affiliated with Portsmouth, NH, but it’s a Portsmouth, NH tugboat nonetheless.  The 55′ tugboat belongs to Riverside and Pickering Marina of Eliot, ME.  If you’re lucky enough, you’ll catch it cruising along the Piscataqua and you’ll probably wonder why the maroon tugboat isn’t maroon (like me)…but I’d love to see this docked with the Moran Towing tugs.  It certainly helps bring more color to the working waterfront.

Be sure to see another angle of this sunrise shot HERE – featuring the Harbor Place dock and the Middle and Piscataqua River bridges in the distance.

The Peirce Island Boat Ramp

Today’s post poses a question, to HDR or not to HDR?  HDR stands for High Dynamic Range, and I’ve begun to use the abbreviation as a verb with friends & family as we joke about the process (which uses multiple exposures overlaid on top of each other to reach a broader dynamic light range)….but as you can tell from scrolling through the website, it’s something that I truly enjoy doing – as I find that it’s similar to the darkroom black & white processing I learned to do in college.  The digital post processing is still the romantic part to me (although shooting the scene is still most important), where it is up to you to create your vision.  I use it mostly to try and replicate what I saw with my eyes when I was taking the photos.  A single exposure often feels too flat to me, still beautiful – but short of the memory I have of the particular scene/experience.

To serve as an example, I’ve posted two versions of one of my all-time favorite images – the sunrise shot taken of the Peirce Island Boat Ramp.  The first is the “HDR” version, while the image below is nearly “out of the camera” with minimal additional tweaking.  Regardless – it was clearly a beautiful scene, but I’m curious to hear – which do you prefer?

The Rockingham & A Sunrise over the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard

The Rockingham on State Street in a mid-winter scene.  Below, the first rays of the morning sun begin to reach over the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard on the horizon as seen from the Joseph Sawtelle Pier in Prescott Park. Experimenting again with crop sizes.

Sunrise at the Memorial Bridge

Today’s post includes two of my favorite shots of the Memorial Bridge.  The first shot was taken on the morning of many other sunset shots you’ve seen here at The Daily Portsmouth, with a few more to follow in the future. Not happy with the original framing, I took it down to the square crop you see here.  It was easily one of the most beautiful mornings I’ve ever witnessed. I really need to wake up early and do it more often….although it definitely helps when the weather is a bit warmer and more cooperative.

Below is one of the first “self portrait” shots I’ve done around town (I think I picked this signature move up from my dad, who is one of the culprits responsible for getting me into photography).  You wouldn’t guess it, but it’s the road grate of the Memorial Bridge. (Click image for a full size of the grate in all its green & rusty glory)
