Everyone’s favorite tugboats are featured today, with more of an intimate view than I typically feature. The closer shot of the working vessels highlights their intense buffers on the bow, which looks to be some seriously industrial rubber. I love how rugged they look the closer you get, with some nice coloration on the green hulls, in contrast against the more attractive maroon portion we all so easily recognize.

Harpoon Willy’s | Portsmouth, NH
The ceiling fan at Harpoon Willy’s is seen under an open blue sky earlier this winter with the green & white striped canvas in storage for the season. Much to my pleasant surprise, I realized that two decks are sort of open for business. The new upstairs heated deck at Poco’s is open according to a sign on Bow Street, and the deck at the River House was open for business today (St. Patrick’s Day) – probably thanks to the beautiful warm spring weather in the high 60s this afternoon. Although the deck didn’t stay open after dusk (the outdoor lights aren’t yet working for the season) – it was a nice reminder of the warm afternoons to come.
I loved this angle of the ceiling at Harpoon Willy’s – in all my years in Portsmouth, I don’t think I’d ever realized that there was a ceiling fan here….above the ceiling fan you can see the skeleton of the Martingale Wharf building still under construction on Bow Street. Some locals tell me that the owners expect to have the new building complete with a restaurant open later this year during the fall….I’ll keep you posted on what I hear around town.

As the Sun Retreats | From the Memorial Bridge
I went for a walk tonight to try out a new wide angle lens. The quality isn’t the best – so when shooting directly towards the sun you get these intense sun flares. Sometimes it ruins a shot pretty quickly, but for some reason I was really digging the rich red flare and the sunset with some more subtle processing…it was the first time I’ve caught the sunset on a weeknight in quite a while. Hope you enjoy!

New Freighter in Town (Jin Qiang)
A new freighter arrived in town recently, the Jin Qiang of Panama. The ship closely resembles another that I featured not long ago in a shot taken from the Memorial Bridge (see post HERE). With the sand & salt piles lower recently, a few ships were due to arrive to increase the stockpiles as the winter winds down. In the shot above you can see how empty the hull is getting as the vessel is standing tall out of the water. Enjoyed snapping a couple quick shots on my way home to eat lunch today.

Tugboats at Night | Eugenia Moran
It was so warm out after work on Monday evening that I decided to watch a freighter come up the river and enjoy the sights of the waterfront for a while (and I wasn’t even wearing any gloves). Quite a beautiful night. I was particularly digging the reflection of the Eugenia Moran in the Piscataqua. This 3-exposure composition had a nice long exposure for the third shot so I was able to get some nice tones in the reflective water. The Decks were looking pretty sharp in preparation for their opening next month! More to follow on that later in the week.

Bow Street at Night

Here is a street scape view of Bow Street, to complement the post from earlier this week that depicted the waterside view. There is no shortage of hanging signs on this side of the buildings – prime advertising for the businesses lucky enough to have such a great spot. Only a few more weeks until the newly configured decks will be open for business. Below is another shot of Bow Street taken from 100 Market Street, where you can see the curve of the street.
