On a recent trip out to Great Island Common in New Castle, I was hoping to get some intense sunrise clouds and sky towering over the Atlantic Ocean. What greeted me was a cloud filled sky and a peaceful more subdued scene. As the sun rose over the horizon in the distance, it peeked through the clouds in the distance to create this fiery glow behind Whaleback Lighthouse during this 90+ second exposure.

Sunset Over Whaleback Lighthouse
Sunset Over Whaleback Lighthouse
A memorable sunset at Fort Stark in New Castle, NH after the moonrise for the super moon was a bust due to the clouds on the horizon. At least the clouds provided us with a beautiful canvas for the sunset!
Brant Point Light
Brant Point Light
For today’s image we head to the island of Nantucket to feature one of its coastal lighthouses. Brant Point is in walking distance to the island’s main downtown district, and greets visitors on the ferry as they arrive. It has an iconic red walkway and is usually decorated for the season – featuring an American flag in the summer and a wreath for the Christmas season. I thought its classic profile looked beautiful beneath a clear blue sky.
Whaleback at Sunset
Whaleback at Sunset
While waiting for the arrival of the full moon last month, I enjoyed playing around with some long exposures of the ocean and Whaleback Lighthouse off the coast of New Castle, NH. I love the rich colors from the moisture in the air at sunset along with the smooth glassy surface of the atlantic ocean.
Fort Constitution
One of the seacoast’s icons is the Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse, which sits on the coastline in New Castle in Fort Constitution. I have always loved getting out in a boat on the Piscataqua River – and this day was no exception with the warm air and soft rays of sunset on the fort’s wall and the lighthouse.
Coastal Beauty
Whaleback Lighthouse at Sunset
During an evening out on the water with Portsmouth Harbor Cruises, the towering clouds in the sky were kissed by the setting sun’s light. With this as a backdrop, the iconic Whaleback Lighthouse stands tall in Portsmouth Harbor between New Castle and Kittery. The rich texture of the natural stone that the lighthouse was constructed with is my favorite part, beautiful against any sky.

Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse
One of my favorite vistas in the seacoast features the Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse at Fort Constitution in New Castle. I probably inherited my love of lighthouses from my dad, and we made our first trek to this beauty many years ago – and I’m always coming back in search of good lighting and to enjoy the view of the ocean. Be sure to take a tour if you ever have the opportunity!
