Summer Afternoon By The Decks in Portsmouth
A stand up paddle boarder navigates the Piscataqua River amidst the Moran Towing tugboats and a massive freighter known as the Curacao Pearl from Nassau. The riverfront from The Decks in Portsmouth is one of my favorite things to watch in the summer time – and this image captures the essence of summer for me.
The Heritage and The Tugboats
The M/V Heritage and the Moran Towing tugboats sit amidst a thick fog in the Piscataqua River. Another iconic coastal New England scene with fog so thick that the Memorial Bridge can barely be seen in the background.
Tugboats in The Fog
This week’s weather has given us some beautiful sunrises and sunsets, and some intense fog over the river. One afternoon on my way home from work I decided to take a quick detour past the Moran Towing tugboats to see if they were engulfed in any fog. I always love a moody New England type waterfront scene, and for me – this was perfect.
There’s nothing like a summer sunset at day’s end in Portsmouth from the decks! The sun retreats behind the massive salt piles and leaves a beautiful glow in the sky, often creating dramatic scenes with the summer clouds.
The brick row houses that line the waterfront of Portsmouth along Market Street and Ceres Street are immediately recognizable and easily one of my favorite vistas in Portsmouth.
The Atlantic Pearl unloads salt before the arrival of winter. The glow of the tugboats’ and the freighter’s lighting is one of my favorite things.
One of my favorite scenes of Portsmouth in the shadows of sunset. The Moran Towing tugboats are the silent residents and workhorses of the Piscataqua River.
The iconic Moran Towing tugboats sit at rest beneath a colorful sky in winter.
Today’s image is another composition from a recent harbor cruise out on the Piscataqua River. As we were heading in to dock at the end of our sunset cruise, the city’s evening lights started to overpower the day’s natural light, creating long reflections in the river’s surface and a great glow. This is one of my favorite times of day – just after sunset when the sky is usually still doing amazing things.
A sole Moran Towing tugboat rests amidst the fog in the Portsmouth waterfront. With all of the heat and humidity we’ve been seeing here in the seacoast, there have been many foggy and moody mornings. Here is a profile of a tugboat with one of my favorite parts of town – the decks! Happy Friday and happy summer to all.
