Solitude

Solitude

I decided to get up for sunrise knowing that the fog would still be hanging around on Friday morning. Instead of heading to my usual spots, I decided to venture out to New Castle for some images of boats along the coast in the moody fog. After finding this beauty in the calm water, I knew the early wake up was worth it.

Blue Moon Rising at Whaleback Lighthouse

What an incredible sight this was to watch! I’ve been wanting to get out to New Castle to watch the moon rise for at least more than a year after first accidentally catching the moon rise with my dad out at Odiorne Point. Finally – I had the opportunity to again last evening. Only once in a blue moon…

Braving The Cold at Great Island Common

Braving The Cold at Great Island Common

In yet another surreal scene at Great Island Common in New Castle, a fishing boat heads out to sea amidst a golden scene of sea smoke at Whaleback Lighthouse.  I have another take on the scene in a vertical layout that I’ll save for later in the week – but I continue to be amazed each morning that I head out for sunrise with the gifts of winter at work in the natural world.

Whaleback Sunrise

Whaleback Sunrise

Another frigid morning in coastal New Hampshire filled with fresh light and the promise of a new day.  I couldn’t settle on where I wanted to venture out to for a cold sunrise on a Saturday morning, and decided that if the conditions were great at Great Island Common that I would be kicking myself when I got home and didn’t shoot there.  When I arrived it was a beautiful but underwhelming scene at first (in comparison to last week’s incredible show) – but once the sun rose over the horizon, everything changed for me.  It was a little too cold for my hands to be quick in shooting with 2 sets of gloves, but I had a great morning and enjoyed watching this scene unfold once again!

Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse at Dawn

Before the sun rose on this amazingly cold morning, the entire coastline was lit during the blue hour – highlighting the festive wreath and lighting along the walkway to the Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse.  A few minutes later the scene changed entirely, illuminating the lighthouse and the keeper’s house in a soft orange glow.

A Great Island Morning

The dramatic cold weather and bright sunlight that blasted the scene on the morning of January 8th also brought brilliant scenes in all directions. This view towards the southeast highlights a rock formation and the colorful sea smoke that enveloped the coastline.

Sea Smoke at Great Island Common

After the sun crested over the cloud bank on the horizon, the entire coastline and the sea smoke hovering above the water were illuminated with a fiery orange glow. This was one of the more amazing scenes I’ve ever witnessed and I can’t wait for the next opportunity to venture out on a frigid morning.

One of nature’s gifts during the winter is sea smoke – mesmerizing and even more stunning when seen at sunrise.  This image was captured before the sun crested over the cloud bank on the horizon, which led to one of the most fascinating light shows I’ve enjoyed in a while (and made it well worth the frozen fingers that I had for most of the day).
