The Lighthouse at Sunrise

The Lighthouse at Sunrise

Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse sits along the New Hampshire coastline in New Castle – within the confines of Fort Constitution.  Some of the lasting colors of fall can be seen on the Maine side of the river behind the lighthouse, complimenting the red roofs of the fort.

Sunrise at Whaleback Lighthouse

On a recent trip out to Great Island Common in New Castle, I was hoping to get some intense sunrise clouds and sky towering over the Atlantic Ocean.  What greeted me was a cloud filled sky and a peaceful more subdued scene.  As the sun rose over the horizon in the distance, it peeked through the clouds in the distance to create this fiery glow behind Whaleback Lighthouse during this 90+ second exposure.

Sunset Over Whaleback Lighthouse

Sunset Over Whaleback Lighthouse

A memorable sunset at Fort Stark in New Castle, NH after the moonrise for the super moon was a bust due to the clouds on the horizon.  At least the clouds provided us with a beautiful canvas for the sunset!

Whaleback at Sunset

Whaleback at Sunset

While waiting for the arrival of the full moon last month, I enjoyed playing around with some long exposures of the ocean and Whaleback Lighthouse off the coast of New Castle, NH.  I love the rich colors from the moisture in the air at sunset along with the smooth glassy surface of the atlantic ocean.

Supermoon over Whaleback Lighthouse

I had a fantastic evening last Friday – my wife and I decided to have a picnic out at Great Island Common in New Castle, NH so we grabbed some food from Napoli Market & Deli in the South End and headed out to find a spot by the sea.  I also secretly hoped that we might get a glimpse of the supermoon over Whaleback Lighthouse – we are so fortunate to live so close to an oceanfront vista that could enjoy the profile of a lighthouse and a natural astronomical phenomenon.  Unfortunately, some clouds on the horizon kept the massive moon hidden for a few extra minutes and it was higher in the sky – but the light at sunset made this a memorable scene.

Solace by The Sea

This simple scene at Great Island Common in New Castle, NH is the favorite of many locals and many photographers.  The tree in the distance is one of the most beautiful that I’ve ever seen, and has one of the best views of maybe any tree in the seacoast – perched on the Atlantic Ocean with views of Whaleback Lighthouse, Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse and the Isles of Shoals.

Coastline at Great Island Common

On a recent drive around the coast just before sunset, I decided to stop at Great Island Common to see how the day’s light looked out over the ocean.  The tide allowed for some quick exploration along the rocks – enjoying the view of Whaleback Lighthouse in the distance.  On an incredibly windy afternoon, the waves against Whaleback were less than I was hoping for – but still a beautiful scene.
