State Street & Fleet Street | (The View from My Office)

State Street is coming along in the broader Portsmouth picture, having served its time as a seedy location with housing for the town drunks a long time ago in the rowhouses closer to The Common Man, Googie’s, Agave and Dos Amigos, making way for new condominiums, fancier restaurants soon to be complimented by some new period lighting and fancier sidewalks.

My office on the 1st floor at Ocean Bank looks out to this corner at State and Fleet Street, and often I’m fortunate to hear the horns of cars warning those who don’t realize that State Street is still a One Way Street.  Sometimes entertaining, sometimes obnoxious.  On this particular afternoon a ridiculous thunderstorm was making its way across the seacoast, with some sunshine visible on the drive-up to the left along with the rain still moist on the window.

Custom House | Pleasant Street

The Custom House has been featured previously on The Daily Portsmouth from the vantage point of the 2nd floor at Ocean Bank.  This shot was taken from my parking spot in the employee parking lot. The building is a classic and imposing structure located in Portsmouth’s historic district downtown and plays host to several local businesses and also a delicious sushi restaurant, Sakurabana.

Antique Wooden Model Ship | Ocean Bank

Ocean Bank was founded in 1854 in Kennebunk, Maine.  This model ship was built and held at its headquarters at some point in the late 1800s or early 1900s.  Today it sits in the bank’s lobby at the 325 State St. Corporate Headquarters.  It’s an astoundingly detailed little boat that I take for granted when I walk past it 10x a day, and only thought about it when I overheard a customer admiring it this afternoon.  The bank’s got a lot of history, but still not nearly as much as Portsmouth itself.  New England is old and dense, two features which have in large part spared seacoast NH of the economic woes of overbuilding and the urban sprawl of Florida and California, among others.

Sunset from the Second Floor

work-evening-hdr-2

Great Light from the 2nd floor at Ocean Bank before hitting the road for the day. This parking lot becomes ridiculous during the spring and summer evenings as Portsmouth’s population more than doubles. I’ll try to get a nice shot of the lot when it’s “under attack”, and the drive-through is double and triple parked in. In the meantime, thank goodness it’s Spring.
