River House | Bow Street

The latest installment of Storefronts of Portsmouth features The River House and its painted sign – a favorite spot of mine on Bow Street.  The location is pretty incredible right on the curve of Bow Street….overlooking the Tugboats and the Middle and Piscataqua River Bridges.  I really enjoy their food…but most of all, I love their deck location for a sunset on a spring evening.  I can’t wait for the decks to open…the countdown is on (let’s hope mother nature decides to do her part sometime soon).

At the River House Deck

I went to the River House for a late dinner on Friday night with my brother to celebrate his birthday.  You can sort of see us in the shot above – both with iPhones cranking away, a familiar site for those of you who know us.

I wanted to feature the changing look of the River House’s deck, with the new 2nd-level outdoor deck looking like it’s well on its way to completion.  The steel structure that overhangs the alley is up, and I was told last time over there that there will be a great outdoor addition (think cold beer) to the new setup.  They’re also working on a second indoor dining room to expand their space.  This has become one of my favorite spots for outdoor dining & adult beverages during the spring/summer….and it’ll be interesting to see everything once it’s all finished.  Check out the shot below for a “before” of the outdoor area.

Departure | Moran Towing

One of the freighters visiting further upstream in the Piscataqua River from the NH State Pier making its way back towards Portsmouth Harbor. Moran Towing escorts the freighter in the fleeting afternoon hours towards the Atlantic Ocean.  Seen below is the Harpoon Willy’s waterfront deck.

RIVER HOUSE | 53 Bow Street Under a Blue Sky

Portsmouth’s restaurants and row houses provide a unique feel to the city.  I plan to do a series highlighting the hanging signs of Portsmouth, today’s post features the River House – Casual Waterfront Dining (which I enjoyed several times over the past two weeks!).
