As I was heading home from work, in the late afternoon sunlight, I was itching to find something to shoot. There weren’t many clouds in the sky, but the colors of the sky were gorgeous. As I was making my way down the hill on Market Street and approaching the salt piles, I realized how perfectly and subtly the cliff of one of the piles was lit. I immediately found a parking spot and hopped out of the car so I could capture the light. I love the resemblance ot a mountain top or a sand dune…and the fact that it’s the materials that will be keeping our roads safe in a few short months.

Sunset Over the Tugboats
Today’s post features the Portsmouth waterfront once again, this time from the other side of the Moran Towing tugboats. The sun had only a few minutes left before it was completely gone for the day. The scene was pretty subtly lit and gorgeous…and it’s times like that when I never know whether the brackets (multiple exposures) that I capture will produce a shot worthy of posting or not. I was pleased to find out that this combination of three shots happened to add some HDR magic to the scene, with a gigantic glowing orange orb…accentuating the setting sun and subtly lighting the tugs. I hope you enjoy…tomorrow I’ll be featuring more architecture.
This shot was taken from the deck of The River House, which continues to enjoy a great vantage point on the waterfront…and boy am I glad that spring is here, though I am pretty sure I would enjoy a few extra degrees of warmth.
Manitowoc Cranes | Portsmouth, NH
Another capture with the gorgeous and popular orange clouds being emitted from Portsmouth’s working waterfront illuminated by the sunset. Taken from Bow Street under the little trellis next to some of the street’s residential units.

Freighter | A Winter Throwback
It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a freighter unloading/loading at the Granite State Minerals terminal on Market Street and the Piscataqua River. Here’s a throwback to the winter in their memory. For now, it’s sunshine and the decks on the waterfront.

Salt Piles, Portsmouth NH Waterfront
The salt piles appear to have been capped for the spring season now that the brutal New England winter has subsided for at least a couple months. These behemoths arrive on Portsmouth’s working waterfront from huge freighters coming from around the globe…if you’re lucky enough, you’ll see one coming under one of the lift bridges, or even unloading at the downtown Granite State Minerals post on Market Street. For whatever reason, I find these huge fabric covers quite aesthetically pleasing. Maybe it’s the symmetry, or maybe it’s the lipstick on the pig of materials underneath. What do you think? To the left you can see the Sheraton Harborside Portsmouth. View is opposite the Prudential building photographed in this post: Olde Harbor Area.
