Sanders Fish Market

Sanders Fish Market in the South End is one of my favorite places to stop and grab some freshly caught fish to make for dinner.  On this particular evening I happened to be in the area for reasons unrelated to shopping, but it let me enjoy the scene a bit more than the normal rush in/rush out routine.  The South End is truly one of the most beautiful parts of town surrounded by lovely waterfront scenes.

Winter Overtakes Sanders Fish Market

It has without question been a ridiculous New England winter…and this image of Sanders Fish Market on Marcy Street provides further evidence.  The pastel buildings lining the waterfront along Marcy Street are a favorite of mine…and I especially like the fact that you can stroll into the market and pick up some fresh locally caught fish.  The snow and the icicles make this frigid scene feel a bit less welcoming, but if you make the trip you won’t regret it.

South Mill Pond

Here is a little taste of the South Mill Pond as seen in the late afternoon/early evening.  I’ve always adored the little house & building right on the water here across from Sanders Fish Market.  I’d never crept down onto the rocks until this afternoon – and it gave me a much better view of the water as it streamed into the South Mill Pond from the Back Channel as the tide was coming in.

The blurred water is the product of a long exposure….which was due to the use of the neutral density filter to darken the lens…which also lends a warmer feel to the image with all of the sunlight that was allowed into the camera’s sensor during the shot.

Sanders Fish Market | Marcy St.

Marcy Street is one of my favorite streets in Portsmouth.  It’s a great narrow little pass from Prescott Park to Sanders Fish Market (seen here) and New Castle, whether you’re running, biking or driving.  It can get a bit dicey since it’s so narrow, especially if you happen to be running, biking or driving when someone else is running/biking/driving!  The area feels (and is) incredibly historic, and has seen quite a renaissance from what I’ve told – from back in the day when Portsmouth’s South End was a lot more sketchy.  At sunset one night I decided to stop and snap a few of the newly renovated market, that has one of the best locations in town with its view of the Piscataqua River behind the building.
